From Bullying to Self-Love Advocate by Ta’lor Pinkston

Ta’lor Pinkston, MSW, is the Founder of LADYHOOD journey, LLC, a prospective Self-love Counseling and Wellness biz for women. She is a Self-love Social Worker and Lifestyle Blogger who writes poetry and prose that focuses on helping college girls, mothers, and every woman to incorporate self-love into their lifestyle, to be advocates for women’s empowerment, and to focus on Healing Over Everything. Some of the topics discussed on her blog include beauty standards, self-care, motherhood, body shaming, equality, and toxic relationships.

I had the honor of working with Ta’lor on designing the logo for Ladyhood Journey. Through our connection, I’ve learned that Ta’lor wants every woman she comes in contact with to feel love and completion from within.

Taylor’s mission:

Your self-love. Your truth. Your story. Your journey.

Here’s her story:

Ta’lor, what is your outlook on life?

My outlook is to infuse self-love into my life. I believe that self-love is the center of wellness. It is important to show my daughter and all women the importance of implementing our lives with an abundance of self-love so that we are able to give love fully and in abundance.

I spent so many years neglecting myself, and I made the commitment about a year ago that I would no longer allow myself to forget myself; my dreams, my passions, my goals, and my essence.

Did you have any insecurities growing up? Where did they come from and how did you overcome them?

When I was in grade school, I was bullied by my “friends” about having big lips, the gap in between my teeth, and ultimately they would put me down by trying to steal and stop my glow. Being bullied was something I never talked about. I think I was ashamed to admit it to myself because it made me feel weak, but when I started being transparent about my truth, it gave me strength. As I got older, I carried their teasing with me, and I never really felt comfortable with my big lips, and never wore lipstick because of them being big. That is why my logo for LADYHOOD journey is lips, my lips because I am defying everything that they said was ugly about me, and declaring it to be beautiful.

You started a #Bullying Challenge. What inspired you to start the journey including the twitter chats?

#YOUBULLIEDME is a Social Media and Journal Challenge that I created, not only for my own healing but for anyone who has experienced bullying and those who are being bullied now. I believe that we heal stronger, together. I host LADYHOOD journey Twitter Chats with an array of topics including, #beautyBSchat, #AntiBodyShaming, and #Mommyhood. During the first week of October, during the start of the #YOUBULLIEDME challenge, I hosted a chat called #boobullies to discuss bullying in relationships and domestic violence, because I believe that they tie into one another. My chats are all designed to bring healing to each participant. I believe that by sharing our truths in the chats and in the #YOUBULLIEDME challenge, we can raise awareness, and help prevent others from experiencing the life-long challenges that can come with being bullied. You can find me on Twitter@ladypinkspen

You are a survivor of bullying. How did bullying change your life and what advice do you give to people who are suffering effects of bullying?

Even though I am the host of the #YOUBULLIEDME Challenge, I participated and responded to each prompt. This challenge has helped me see that being bullied made me a stronger individual. I was silent about being bullied for so many years, and by not sharing my story with others, I was only giving power to my bullies. I feel a weight lifted off of me and know that I am helping myself and others heal by living my truth. If someone is being bullied, know that you are only a victim if you are quiet about your pain. Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself, no matter the threat that a bully may make. The more you share, the more you heal.

I have the pleasure of working with you on your brand, Ladyhood Journey. How did this idea come to you? What are your plans for the brand? And who do you hope to reach?

While I was pregnant with my daughter, I went through a minor depression and struggled to find the joy in having her. I felt like I was bringing her into a world that I did not prepare for her to be in. I was not writing anymore, and my passion seemed to slip away from me. As I got close to my delivery date, I came across a blog post that talked about sharing your truth and living authentically; I felt the passion again. I logged into and created my blog in hopes of helping college girls to not make the same errors that I had made in relationships and dating due to neglecting myself. What began as a blog for College Girls, grew into other topics surrounding self-love. All topics are targeted toward women and girls from the high school student to the CEO and mompreneur. Each topic is something I am passionate about and all focus on areas that we as women struggle with including, Women’s Empowerment, Beauty Standards, Body Positivity, Motherhood, Healthy Relationships, and Equality. My future plans for my brand, LADYHOOD journey, LLC, are to:

  1.   Provide women with self-love essentials that will help them to feel good about themselves, called the “LADYHOOD journey gift box.”
  2.   To write a self-help book for College Girls on dating and relationships
  3.   To open a Counseling and Mentoring facility for women and families, that provides group counseling, one-on-one therapy sessions, and a safe-space for events targeted around empowering women and girls of every race/ethnicity, socio-economic class, religion, sexual orientation, age, and culture.
